A bad licence check fails and starts up. This is the same failure that happens every time I try to log in to my Windows instance and has therefore been a source of frustration for years. It can be disabled in Safe Mode and also by using a different method to log in. It is going to be fixed in a later version of Windows.
Service packs and cumulative updates that impact the VPN client is a great idea. I did not need this most of the time but occasionally needed to use VPN when moving from a hotel to a conference centre or vice versa, and that helped. Otherwise I used the regularly occurring Windows Update updates whenever I felt like it.
Lenovo has one of the lowest rated customer support reputations among manufacturers, and I found their support to be quite sub-par. It's the hardest to reach support and they don't have telephone support available east of the Pacific, or over the weekend.
This business has AVG on its server and Microsoft Security Essentials on the clients, and somehow one of the clients got infected with a variant of a worm known as My little pronny which infects network shares. It may not be the exact one described in the link as these things mutate. Not too difficult to fix in this instance but a nuisance, and not picked up by the security software. 7211a4ac4a
